our history

We began in 1951 as a self help lending group affiliated with the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Our name in those days was Self Reliance and our goal was to provide financial help to newly arrived Ukrainian migrants.

Over time the rules and regulations under which the banking business was conducted progressively strengthened and formalised through the establishment of Dnister as a Credit Society in 1959. It was from these humble beginnings that the current day financial institution emerged.

Dnister is proud of its background, its heritage and the fact that it is the largest ethnic based credit co-operative in Australia.
