The Weak Link

Whilst as a service provider, we do our up most to deliver a secure and safe online banking platform. The weak link in the security chain for Internet Banking is still the end user. NetTeller reports "That every incident of online fraud that has been investigated by NetTeller staff has proven to be due to either a virus on the users PC or some other unsafe activity conducted by the user."

This reiterates the importance of being diligent in keeping your passwords secret, not recording them anywhere, maintaining antivirus and firewall defenses, and when using being very cautious if are required to use internet cafés and public computers, and in such cases use on-off passwords.

Crypto Keypad

The moving keypad on our internet banking login screen, assists in ensuring that users do not use the physical keyboard to enter their password.  This detracts hackers from tracking keystrokes and the moving Crypto Keypad detracts viruses that are able to track mouse clicks, cursor positions.  Ultimately the key to security is ensuring that you protect your computer from these viruses and change your password frequently.

Passwords captured by Trojan viruses are often stored for some time (possibly several months) before they are sold to people who use them for criminal purposes. If a user changes their password in the meantime then their risk is reduced. People who use a small set of favourite passwords are more vulnerable since they could, without realising, change their password to one which is now in the hands of fraudsters. The same password should not be used in more than one situation. For example a users Pay Anyone or Second password for external transfers should be different from their login password.

Choosing your Password

There are a number of ways you can choose passwords that are easy to remember and yet avoid password recycling.

Below are some tips:

  1. Use BOTH upper- and lower-case letters

  2. Place numbers and punctuation marks randomly in your password

  3. Use special characters: ! @ # $ % * ( ) - + = , < > : :

  4. Make your password long and complex, so it is harder to crack

  5. To help you easily remember your password, consider using a song/movie title or phrase as a password. For example, “The Quick Brown Fox” might become “tQB2%f5X”.

  6. Use a password that can be entered quickly. This makes it harder for anyone looking over your shoulder to steal it.

Using your Password

Below are some tips for using your password:
  1. Use different passwords for different accounts. That way, if one account is breached, your other accounts won’t be at risk too.

  2. Never use your NetTeller password for online shopping sites or free email accounts such as Hotmail or Gmail.

  3. Change your passwords every three months.

  4. Don’t share your password with anyone else.

  5. Never enable the Save Password option. Pre-saved passwords make it easy for anyone else using your computer to access your accounts.

  6. Never walk away from a shared computer without logging off. This will ensure no one else can access your accounts.

  7. Never use sample passwords available on websites.
