We are phasing out cheques

Cheques are being gradually phased out across Australia as part of a national change to the way payments are made. This is an industry-wide decision supported by the Australian Government. The change means that cheques will eventually no longer be issued or accepted.

We know some of our members have relied on cheques for a long time. While the way we bank is changing, our commitment to supporting you has not. You can continue to use cheques until 15 June 2026 and take your time to understand what comes next.

As a member-owned bank, our role is to make sure you have the information and support you need. We will explain what is changing, what it means for you, and what alternative options are available.

This page will guide you through the key dates, answer common questions, and provide information on personal assistance for extra support.

FAQ

Why are cheques being phased out?

Cheque use has declined significantly across Australia. The banking industry and government have agreed to modernise payments, retiring the national cheque system, making payments faster, safer and more reliable. This is a nationwide change and not a decision made by Dnister alone.

What cheque phase out means? Key dates.

  • From 15 March 2026 we will no longer accept new cheque book orders.
  • From 15 June 2026 issuing and writing cheques will no longer be available and cheque services will be phased out.

Can I still write cheques I already have?

You may continue to use existing cheques until 15 June 2026. After this date writing cheques will no longer be available.

Can I still deposit cheques?

Yes. Cheques will continue to be accepted for deposit into your account until further notice.

What should I do if I currently use cheques?

We recommend planning ahead and moving to an alternative payment method as soon as possible.

What are the alternatives?

There are other simple ways to pay and get paid:

  • Online transfers through the Dnister App and internet banking
  • PayID® and Osko® for fast payments between accounts
  • Visa debit cards for everyday purchases
  • BPAY® for paying bills
  • Direct debit for automatic payments from your account

Will this change affect my account or interest?

No. This change only affects cheque services and does not impact your account balance, interest, or other banking products.
